Circular Co-housing
The scheme involves a strategic overview that investigates how to use circular principles as a method to create and sustain a community, with the intension to become a bofællesskab. As Fromm, D., 1991, stated “Formation is the key ingredient”, so that means, in the case of a successful bofællesskab, it is not the architecture alone that can create an effective community, but the process even before people begin to put pen to paper and move in together. The scheme follows the process from the conception of a community on-site in Sydhavn that establish around a common activity, to the collective struggle of the design and build process, through to the resultant architectural scheme that the community will live together in.

“Respecting diversity in design means considering not only how a product is made but how it is to be used, and by whom.”

Contrary to seeing designing for disassembly as a singular sustainable method of keeping materials in a closed loop with no waste or loss of value, instead lets see it as one of many opportunities created by a circular model. Simpler processes for design and construction can democratise the process, enabling the community to participate effectively in the creation of their own homes.
The project presents the benefits of a circular economy, in establishing a robust model for creating dwellings, where the community can be involved collaboratively in the design and construction processes. The resulting architecture could differ significantly from one bogruppe to the next, but through effective decision-making and considered design, a cohesive and interesting piece of architecture that reflects the values of the community and its circular principles, is created.
